I'm an MA student in linguistics at Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran. I found one of your poems entitled as "Season of Revival". One of my professors, Dr. Reza Parhizgar, has translated this poem in persain. Your poem is just great. And if you are its real poet I just wanted to tell u that i can send the poem to you--i mean the translation --most willingly.
This is my email : yaldafallahy@yahoo.com
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Yours

Asking for rights
Dear Azadeh Farahmand,
On behalf of Kosztolanyi Dezso Kavehaz Cultural Foundation, I am writing You to give us permission to publish the Hungarian translation of one of Your essays originally appeared in the book titled The New Iranian Cinema: Politics, Representation and Identitiy in the foundation’s periodical METROPOLIS and on our journal’s website. I have written You through Irandokht, but it seems You did not get our e-mail. Let me write You a few sentences about our periodical. METROPOLIS is a Hungarian quarterly on film theory and history published in 700 copies and distributed in Hungary. It was established in 1997 and is edited by the teachers of the Film Theory and History Department of the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. Our work is assisted by an editorial committee including respected and well-known Hungarian film experts such as Andras Balint Kovacs or Yvette Biro. Each METROPOLIS issue presents a certain film theory or history problem or the work of an important artist by discussing it from different points of view. As supporting material we mainly use translation of relevant studies that have not yet been published in Hungary. METROPOLIS also has a website accessible by password only for its registered members. Our website is supported by the Eötvös Loránd University which provides the necessary storing capacity and professional assistance for its operation. In Hungary, audiovisual and cinema education was launched only a few years ago in secondary schools and universities. As Hungarian editorial companies hardly publish film theory or history books, there is a great demand for our materials and METROPOLIS plays an important role in the training of future primary and secondary school teachers of film and media studies. METROPOLIS also operates as a kind of research centre of university students and tries to provide opportunity for young cinema critics and future theorists to publish their studies. Being a non-profit organisation, METROPOLIS can only rely on the financial support of cultural foundations and private donations. As sustaining a journal in film theory in Hungary is extremely difficult, it would create us a problem to pay for the author’s license fee of the articles we would like to translate and publish in our journal, therefore we ask You to give us an exemption from the payment, if it is possible. We would like to translate the essay below: Farahmand, Azadeh: Perspectives on Recent (International Acclaim for) Iranian Cinema. In: Tapper, Richard (ed.): THE NEW IRANIAN CINEMA: POLITICS, REPRESENTATION AND IDENTITY. London: IB Tauris, 2002. pp. 86-108. We kindly ask You to answer as soon as possible! Please inform us even in case of a negative answer or if the publisher is the copyright holder. We look forward to Your favourable response. Thank You for Your understanding in advance.
Yours sincerely,
Kriszta Kozma

hello.
Dear Azadeh,
My youngest brother has always been interested in film making and directing. However due to different reasons he did not continue his interests after finishing high school. Now that he has finished his studies and working full time, I see little hints here and there that he is remembering his old dreams and passions for film and cinema.
Anyways, to get to the point, his birthday is coming up and I thought it would be a good idea to buy him a few books regarding directing, film making and similar topics. So I was wondering if you would kindly be able to point me in the right direction and suggest a few books for me to get him as birthday gifts. I live in Australia so I can only purchase books which are available online or here in the country. Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Parisa.

Parisa jan,
I am sorry for the few days of delay in getting back to you. I hope there is still time to get your brother’s gift before his birthday.
I think it is a good idea to start from basics, and to get a general overview and a broad historical understanding. For this, I recommend Film Art: An Introduction, by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. There are so many aspects to filmmaking that I am not sure which would match your brother’s interest. But to make this a short list, I would sat that two fundamental aspects are the story and editing. For the former, I recommend Lew Hunter’s Screenwriting 434 by Lew Hunter, and Art of Dramatic Writing by Lajos Egri.
And for the latter, I suggest The Technique of Film Editing by Karl Reisz and Gavin Millar.
All best,
Azadeh.

Dear Azadeh:
I actually took the time to do some research on my earlier question, and then felt selfish about giving you more work to do around the holidays, so don't worry about the list.
All the best,
Hajkhanoom

Movies to see
This is an exiting time to catch lots of movies as some of the older releases (such as CRASH or CINDERELLA MAN) return to compete with the new releases for nominations. Run to CRASH if you have not seen it yet!
SYRIANA and JARHEAD are about the contemporary issue of war and the American foreign policy with complex and engaging plots. GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK is a little gem of movie, which by narrating a story of journalistic courage during the repressive McCarthy era has plenty of contemporary ramifications. David Strathairn (one of my favorites) does a great job playing the real life Edward Murrow who challenges and exposes Sen.
McCarthy.
TRANSAMERICA and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN take on dealing with intricate subject of sexuality. The latter is already taking on much buzz for mixing homosexuality with the cowboy genre, and has opened to sell-out screenings in major markets. I would not be surprised if BROKEBACK by the very talented and versatile Ang Lee be the 2006 best picture!
Be on the lookout for foreign movies! PARADISE NOW is a terrific, nuanced and unsettling movie about the difficult subject of terrorism (more specifically, suicide bombing).
KING KONG and MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA are spectacles that are most likely going to be Oscar contenders in few categories. They are both done by directors of previously Oscar winning films in the best picture category (Peter Jackson of LORD OF THE RINGS and Rob Marshall of CHICAGO). I have not seen any of these two titles yet, but I suspect the first may be an elongated (and possibly boring) action packed drama, and the second a visual feast with little sophistication, filled with Asian beauties and an Orientalist theme.
Have fun!
