Thanks Zohreh, for your expert and prompt reply. I will certainly take your advice and see my Doctor, so he can remold the biteguard and remove the pressure on the (upper tooth) which hurts when I take out my biteguard. The root canal on this tooth took place almost 18 years ago. Do people need to redo this operation every few years? Please advise.
And thanks for your complimenting my name!
All the best,
Hajkhanoom

Root Canal Treatment
Dear Hajkhanoon:
I am glad to help, I'm sure you realize how hard it is to give you the best information over the internet.
A successful RTC, should not need to be re-done. Yours having lasted eighteen years, must have been good enough. However, a tooth that has no nerve, also has no blood supply, which leads to its dryness which in turn makes it more brittle.
Sometimes these teeth may crack or break -- especially when extra pressure is applied to them -- and such a fracture can cause pain. I doubt this is the case here because your pain is not due to chewing, but rather related to the mouthguard.I'm sure your dentist will take an x-ray and give you a more accurate answer.
Good luck and best wishes,
Zohreh K. Ghahremani, DDS

Dear Zohre:
I grind my teeth at night, and my Doctor perscribed a bite guard, that fits on the top row of my teeth. However, when I pull it out, one of my teeth that has had a root canal hurts. I'm afraid this tooth might become loose by the constant input and output of the bite guard, so I'm afraid to use it now. Is this a legitaemat fear? Please advise.

Answer to dental question
Dear Hajkhanoom:
First, I love your pen name.
As for the tooth, you have given me very little to work with, but I'll do my best. It's important to know if this tooth is an upper or lower one, (I'm assuming it is upper because the discomfort sounds to be during removal of the bite-guard.) second, when was the root canal performed? A tooth that has had a successful root canal treatment has no nerves, therefore, it can't hurt. Unless the pain is periodontal, which means it originates from the tissues around that tooth. My guess is that your biteguard is too tight and applies pressure to the tissues around that tooth. You may want to present this to whoever gave you the mouthguard. If you have one of those ready-made guards, now you know why dentists don't recommend them -- except for kids' sports -- and you need to have one custum made.
On a final note, please be reminded that pain is nature's gift. If it weren't for pain, we would never know something is wrong. Now you do know because your body is telling you that this needs attention. Mouthguards are a great invention, especially in this day and age when we are under so much stress. So, yes, do wear it, but choose one that provides absolute comfort.
Hope this answers your question.
Best regards,

Help with translation
Salam,
I need help, and it has nothing to do with dentistry. I have read many of your articles in the Iranain, and I must say I enjoy them a lot, and I think you are a great writer, and this is the reason I am writing to you. I need help with translation. My brother is in Sweden and he is about to publish a book about the 10 years that he spent in jail in Iran as a political prisoner. For the introduction of his book he has 5 pages that need to be translated to English professionally, and this is not something that I can do. I don't know what to do, I would pay someone to do it. Please let me know if you know someone that can do this for me. My email address is ben.mesdaghi@conexant.com. Thank you very much.
